A man who subjected his fiancée to years of horrific domestic abuse, eventually driving her to take her own life, has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison for assault and coercive behaviour. Ryan Wellings, 30, had been found not guilty of unlawfully killing his fiancée, Kiena Dawes, 23, who tragically took her life in July 2022. She left behind a heartbreaking suicide note, calling Wellings a "monster" and stating that he had "killed me." Before her death, Kiena had entrusted her nine-month-old daughter to a friend, leaving a note for her loved ones.
While Wellings was acquitted of manslaughter following a trial at Preston Crown Court, the jury convicted him of assault and controlling behaviour after a two-year period of abuse that left Kiena emotionally and physically scarred. His cruel treatment of her included brutal beatings, psychological torment, and threats of horrific violence. Despite the severity of the abuse, Wellings showed no remorse throughout the proceedings, even blowing a kiss to his new girlfriend as the guilty verdicts were read out, while Kiena's sister was visibly distraught in the courtroom.
In sentencing, Judge Altham described Wellings as "a clear danger to any partner you may have in the future," emphasizing the lack of remorse shown by the defendant. Angela Dawes, Kiena's mother, spoke emotionally in court, expressing deep concern about the impact of Wellings' eventual release from prison, fearing for the safety of other women and children. She described him as a dangerous individual, warning that he could continue his pattern of violence once freed.
The abuse Kiena endured was described in harrowing detail during the trial. Jurors learned of Wellings' repeated physical assaults on Kiena, including while she was pregnant, and his constant threats to harm her further. He made cruel comments, including telling her that hitting her was like "hitting a man," and made vile threats about her appearance. On one occasion, he even dunked her head in a bath, coldly telling her to "say goodbye to your baby."
Kiena's death is a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence. The case highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and intervention in cases of coercive control and abuse. While Wellings has been sentenced for his actions, the scars left on Kiena's family and her young child will remain long after his prison sentence ends.
